Chinese scientists explain global seamount formation using mantle dynamics
CB Signal23A team led by researcher Liu Lijun at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has identified a unified explanation for the formation of seamounts globally. Using a self-developed high-resolution global data assimilation model, they reconstructed 270 million years of plate subduction and simulated mantle plume activity to identify the causes of these undersea mountains. The findings were published in Nature Geoscience.
Why it mattersUnderstanding the geological processes that form seamounts is crucial for predicting geological hazards and exploring deep-sea resources. This unified model provides a new framework for studying Earth's dynamic history and mantle processes.

Smart hydrogel bandage releases antibiotics upon detecting harmful bacteria
CB Signal15A team from Brown University has developed a smart hydrogel bandage that releases antibiotics only when harmful bacteria are detected in a wound. The material senses specific bacterial enzymes, releasing antibiotics precisely when needed, which could reduce unnecessary antibiotic use while promoting healing. Animal and in vitro tests showed superior performance compared to existing antimicrobial dressings.
Why it mattersThis innovative wound dressing offers a potential strategy to combat global antibiotic resistance by minimizing antibiotic exposure. Its targeted release mechanism could lead to more effective infection control and improved patient outcomes in wound care.

Bio-tech startup develops BCI headband for menstrual symptom relief
CB Signal9A reproductive biologist has founded Zhi Zi Yin He, a startup developing a non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) headband aimed at alleviating premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms in women. The device seeks to offer a gentler, non-pharmacological alternative to current treatments like painkillers and heat pads, which often have limited efficacy or side effects. The team includes members with expertise in neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience.
Why it mattersThis venture merges BCI technology with a focus on women's health, addressing a significant unmet need for effective PMS management. If successful, it could offer a novel therapeutic approach, demonstrating the expanding applications of BCI beyond traditional neurological conditions.
